Scope
In recent years there has been considerable interest in the visual surveillance of wide area scenes.  The recent, rapid increase in the number of CCTV cameras has expedited the demand for automatic methods of processing their output.

The growth in the development of the field has not been met with complementary systematic performance evaluation of developed techniques. It is especially difficult to make comparisons between algorithms if they have been tested on different datasets under widely varying conditions.

PETS2002 continues the theme of the highly successful PETS2001 workshop on Performance Evaluation of Tracking and Surveillance. The workshop series is unique in that all participants are testing algorithms on the same datasets.

For PETS2002, the theme is gesture recognition and people tracking.

The datasets will be made available to participants of the workshop session. The aims of the workshop are several-fold:

  • to bring together researchers interested in the area of face and gesture
  • to apply different algorithms to the same dataset(s)
  • to evaluate the differences between different models and algorithms
  • to discuss which criteria should be used for objective evaluation
  • to discuss how to document the performance (including accuracy) of visual surveillance algorithms
  • to discuss the development of a methodology for testing algorithms
  • to discuss the ongoing development of a testbed and guidelines for performing empirical   comparative tests.
Who should attend?  Anyone interested in gesture recognition/people tracking and/or performance evaluation/characterisation of vision algorithms.

ECCV'02 accomodation details are available on the ECCV registration page.

For further information on Copenhagen, point your browsers at the following web sites:

As well as PETS'2002, a visit to Copenhagen is not complete without a stroll along the Stroget, a visit to the Tivoli Gardens, Carlsberg Museum (free entry), Little Mermaid, and if you have a day or two longer - Malmo is only 35 minutes away across the new high-speed bridge link, and the world famous Roskilde Viking Ship Museum is well worth a visit too.

For more details on the Roskilde Viking Ship Museum (as featured on the BBC series Blood of the Vikings) try BBC - Archaeology and Ancient History - Vikings   including the Roskilde dig report

There is a proposal to go for dinner (probably inside Tivoli Gardens) on the evening of Saturday June 1 (after the workshop.)  A firework display is held inside Tivoli each Saturday night.  If you are interested, please send an email to
pets2002-dinner@visualsurveillance.org    with   Subject: PETS'2002 dinner
as a booking will need to be made well in advance.  If you have any special dietary preferences please state this in the email.

  Programme
The provisional set of papers (with associated abstracts) will be available on April 30 2002 here

The full advance programme will be available after May 10 2002 here

For an idea of the proceedings, you may like to consult the electronic proceedings for PETS'2000 located here, and for PETS'2001 located here.

  Registration
To register for the workshop please visit the ECCV02 conference registration page.   Note that it is not necessary to register for the main ECCV conference in order to attend the PETS2002 workshop.  You may also register for the main conference and workshops separately if you prefer. The workshop registration fee is 61 Euros (DKK 450) which includes ISBN printed proceedings, a CDROM containing the datasets, lunch and coffee/tea breaks on Saturday June 1.
  Datasets
PETS'2002 is considering new datasets on gesture and action understanding available by March 8 2002 here

Note that you will need to reply to the automated email sent to the email address entered above to confirm the registration.

  Instructions for Authors
Dual submission policy. Papers will be considered that have also been submitted to the main ECCV conference. The same methods/algorithms/systems may be reported. However, your paper MUST report results on the PETS2002 datasets. Additionally, please indicate that:
  1. You are pursuing dual submission. Note that the deadline for the workshop submission is after the paper acceptance notification date (February 11) for ECCV.
  2. That you give permission to the workshop organisers to obtain a copy of the ECCV reviews.
Please read the instructions available under the Datasets link above. Papers will only be accepted which report results based on the PETS2002 datasets.

The final paper format is IEEE two-column. The author kit which contains detailed instructions about the preparation of the paper is available at ftp://ftp.computer.org/press/outgoing/proceedings/. The maximum page length of the final paper is 8 pages.

All printed material, including illustrations, must be kept within a print area of 6-7/8 inches (17.5 cm) wide by 8-7/8 inches (22.5 cm) high. A detailed description of the format is given in the IEEE Author Guidelines. There is a simple LaTex template for this format that may assist you in meeting this format. Or see the MS word template. The submitted file should be in Postscript or PDF format.

Please submit your paper as an email attachment to pets2002@visualsurveillance.org
The paper should be named by concatenating the names of the authors' last names followed by a single digit in the case of multiple submissions by the same authors. Please see the online submission form link below for more details.

Please also complete the online submission form located here.  You may also like to consider submitting your paper on CDROM along with supporting files (movies, images etc).

Do not identify authors in the submitted paper.  All reviewing will be double blind, so the paper must not include any information which allows the authors to be identified.  The names of the authors, however, should be entered along with other details in the online submission form.  Please quote your paper reference number when you submit your paper electronically.

For guidance, you may like to consult the electronic proceedings for PETS'2000 located here.

The electronic proceedings for PETS'2001 are located here.

Image and Vision Computing Journal

A selection of revised papers from the PETS'2002 workshop will be considered for publication in a special issue of Image and Vision Computing Journal.  Specific instructions will be sent to authors after the PETS'2002 workshop.
